A young man asked Socrates the secret to success. Socrates told the young man to meet him near the river the next morning. They met. Socrates asked the young man to walk with him towards the river. When the water reached up their neck, Socrates took the young man by surprise and ducked him into the water. The boy struggled to get out but Socrates was strong and kept him there until the boy started turning blue.Socrates pulled his head out of the water and first thing the man did was to gasp and take a deep breath of air.Socrates asked,”What did you want the most when you were there?”The boy replied,”Air”.Socrates said,”That is the secret to success. When you want success as badly as you wanted air, then you will get it.There is no othe secret.”
Thus, what is most needed to succed in life is the burning desire to achieve a purpose.Just like a small fire cannot give much heat,a weak desire cannot produce great results.
In the search for success,we need to strive for excellence, not perfection.Striving for perfection is neurotic, striving for excellence is progress, because there is nothing that can’t be done better or improved.
Success is not in the achievement but in the achieving. Some people never try because they are afraid to lose.We all want ot win but very few of us are prepared to pay the price to win.winner condition and commit themselves to winning.Playing to win comes out of inspiration whereas playing not to lose comes out of desperation.Ships that go out into the open water face risk rom a storm. But if they sit in the harbour, they would rust and that is not what they were built for. That is the difference between playing to win and playing not tot lose.
For being successful, one has to become a digger for gold. If we critically analyse things,we will find many mistakes but what are we looking for? When we go looking for gold,we have to move tons of dirt to get to an ounce of gold. But when we go looking,we don’t go looking for dirt,we go looking for gold.
Here is someone’s life history. This was a man who failed in business ai the age of 21,was defeated in a legislative race at the age of 22,failed again in business at the age of 24,overcame death of his beloved at the age of 26,had a nervous breakdown at the age of 27,lost a congressional race at the age of 34,lost a senatorial race at the age of 45,failed in an effort ot become vice president at the age of 47,again lost a senatorial race at the age of 49 and was elected President of United States at the age of 52.This man was Abrahim Lincoln.Would we call him a failure? He could hav quit. But to Lincoln, defeat was detour and not a dead end.
All success stories are also the stories of great failures. The only difference is that every time we fail,we should bounce back.I would call it falling forward rather than backward.Setbacks are inevitable in life.We need to become visitors, not victims. We need to turn stumbling blocks into stepping stones.succes is achieved only after struggling like a asmall child trying to walk for the first time. The child fails again and again but finally succeds in its desperate attempts. We all hav low moments,we all fall down and get hurt.We all hav feelings when we doubt ourselves and get into self pity.Success lies in overcoming these feelings and restoring our faith.Success is not something we run into by accident. It takes a lot of preparation and character. There is no magic wand for success. In the real world success comes to doers, not observers.Once when Fritz Kriesler, the great violinist finished concert, someone came upto the stage and said,”I’d give my life to play the way you do”.Kriealer replied,”I did”.Hence, whatever mind can conceive and believe, mind can achieve……….
